Our journey has taken us through the dark deserts of ignorance. We have seen electricity and fuel companies call themselves energy now. We have heard politicians call themselves Ministers of Energy. While Junk Joules was feted, I have been reduced to an invisible shadow. And now just as some sanity and balance seems possible and I can finally take my place in the sun, Junk Joules dominates again.

Note. The letter S stands for Security of supply

The editorial in the August 2004 edition of Solar Action Bulletin has a thoughtful commentary on the Contact Energy campaign. It points out that:

“….In Contact’s TV ads, the trident of sustainability of environmental, social and economic outcomes has been brutalised into a see-saw directly trading off the price of electricity with the environmental impact with security of supply the fixed balancing point.

Security of supply is not a fixed point. A decrease in dependability on the national grid through greater efficiency, self-sufficiency, more local and diverse generation will all aid in security of supply.  Price and environmental outcomes also do not need to move in opposite directions. It was interesting to see Contact’s level see-saw for Energy Efficiency – surely reducing the energy used (price) and consequently reducing the resources consumed will result in somewhat of a droopy see-saw?”
