Creating a friendly climate is not easy in a greenhouse. Outside all the big decisions were made for me by a greater presence, life forces beyond me that brought clouds, rain, light and warmth largely as needed. In here I am set apart from the world and yet I have never needed to know more about how the global energy system works.

Teachers: One of the dangers of eliciting images of greenhouses to communicate Climate Change issues is no one knows the primal response being evoked. The use of the image may generate unhelpful complacency to risks and promote maladaptive practices. Alternative symbols, such as the Trace Gas symbol, make use of the greenhouse symbol unnecessary.
In history, the greenhouse became an important symbol of Man’s domination over nature and the symbol generated by the CrystalPalace built to house the Great Exhibition of 1851 has had an enduring impact on Western consciousness.
