In New Zealand the Government still owns some Bulk-generated electricity and mineral gas companies. Like the private owned companies, the companies or State Owned Enterprises are designed to maximise profits from sales of Bulk-generated electricity. The sales they make generate add hundreds of millions of dollars to government coffers. Just as with private companies, politicians are very mindful of maintaining their short term interests. As a result, the pressure to maintain maximal sales and short-term profits is in direct conflict with policies promoting the efficient use of energy generally.

 As awareness of the impact of burning fossil fuels on atmospheric balances grows these corporations attempt to minimise the public recognition of the potentially risky impacts of their activities. Hence they attempt to write the atmosphere out of the combustion equation.
