It turns out we share a common scientific hero –the legendary Carl Sagan. It is a delight to reminisce about his awe-inspiring TV series, Cosmos. AMPS recalls Carl’s address to the American Association of Physics Teachers in 1990 when he reminded everyone how the phrase “greenhouse effect” is a misnomer.* AMPS is perplexed.

An account of Carl's address can be found in Gale E. Christianson's brilliant history Greenhouse The 200-year Story of Global Warming. Its a fascinating read though sadly some of the language employed works to reinforce popular confusing images of the nature of energy.
