We need to institute national reviews of the symbols we use to portray the nature of energy. ****************************************************** The Principle of the Conservation of EnergyThe nature of energy is that it is constant and conserved and is continually being transformed. The use of symbols evoking images that humans can sustain, conserve, save or waste energy promotes behaviour that puts us all at risk. This is because these symbols confuse energy with our use of energy forms. We use vital energy forms as though they are as bounteous as energy. The symbols also depreciate a scientific principle of great beauty and worth and obscure inspiring visions of our existence. ****************************************************** Bonus Joules – Junk JoulesWe live in an energy flux in which energy forms constantly change and form new balances. Our existence is contingent on our ability to go with the flow and be part of the balances. Hence what is an adaptive use of energy (i.e. generates Bonus Joules) in one moment may become a maladaptive use of energy (i.e. generates Junk Joules) in the next moment and vice versa. Bonus Joules and Junk Joules exist as twin, co-evolving and complimentary symbols. ****************************************************** Greenhouse Earth = Unsustainable World.There exists little science in the communication of the nature of energy and no science in the communication of how Earth’s energy system works. It is probable the use of “greenhouse” image of atmospheric process is profoundly maladaptive. It undermines our ability to understand and co-exist with a most vital, dynamic and organic system. It is more helpful to evoke images of the Atmospheric Effect. ****************************************************** The Answer is Blowing in the WindThe capacity of air to transfer thermal energy by convection is large. By comparison, its capacity to transfer thermal energy by conduction is small. This knowledge is essential to understanding our Thermal Beings and using air most effectively. Its existence has multiple impacts on our use of energy. These include energy use by its creation, maintenance, destruction, formation, location and exploitation by sponsors. Environmental Education Resources have heightened status and power to alter behaviour. Hence failure to be mindful of the impact of formation, location and sponsorship can result a Resource becoming a major agent of Greenwash and generating a massive environmental footprint. ****************************************************** Community, Electricity and Solar Use = Power.Our use of electricity and solar energy is an essential determinant whether our civilisation can sustain itself beyond the Post Cheap Oil/Gas Age and adapt to climate changes. The current New Zealand Electricity and Building Codes are unsustainable. Without Community-derived solutions there is no future. Communities are the prime source of sustainable change. Their involvement is essential to the development of a Knowledge Economy, Energy Efficient Practice and a resilient and sustainable electricity system based on solar power and distributed generation. ****************************************************** Environmental Education = The Communication of CompassionEvery use of energy is a moral act and a risk. As part of creation and according to the Uncertainty Principle we can never truly know what is good and what is bad. Compassion enables us to transcend this state and that is why Environmental Education is the communication of compassion for ones self, for others and for the environment.
